DEEP BELOW WHERE OATS DON'T GROW
YET MUST BE KEPT AT READY,
DOWN THE BLACK AND DUSTY ROADS
THOSE OATS KEPT HORSES STEADY.
FOR FIFTY WEEKS, THEY KEPT THEM KEEN
THEY WORKED EM HARD AND KEPT EM LEAN,
TOGETHER THEY TOILED AS MINING TEAMS
THEY HELD THE GAFF, WITH FEW MACHINES.
THE WORKING MINES , EACH HAD THEIR STALLS
OF WORKPLACE PONIES, WHICH WERE NOT TALL
THOUGH SHORTER THAN THE AVERAGE MARE
THE SIZE DID NOT REDUCE THEIR SHARE.
OF WORK, EACH "EQUINE" PULLED HIS WEIGHT
THOUGH A LIFE OF MINING, WAS HIS FATE.
HAULING TON BY TON, THROUGH SWEAT AND PAIN
HORSE AND MINER , TOGETHER MADE TRAINS
FROM DEEP WITHIN THE SHAFTS BELOW
WHERE NO SUN SHINES, WHERE NO SNOW BLOW.
TO WORK AS "ONE", A TEAM OF FIGHTERS
AGAINST THE ODDS, MADE LIFE MUCH BRIGHTER.
TILL AT LAST TO SURFACE AND "LIGHTS SENSATION"!
THE PONIES, THE MEN AND "THE MINERS VACATION"!
BRING A SHORT REPRIEVE, UNTO OPEN SKIES
YES, THE FIRST FEW DAYS WOULD "HURT THEIR EYES",
TWO WEEKS OF FREEDOM , ON THE SURFACE , NO WORK!
FULL FOURTEEN DAYS FROM THE MUD AND THE MURK,
AND SO QUICKLY PASSED, AS ANOTHER YEAR ENDS
THE PONIES HEAD BACK TO THEIR "UNDER-GROUND PENS"!
THEY'LL PULL THEIR WEIGHT!
THEIR OATS,, THEY'LL EARN!
WE NOW PAY HOMAGE ....TO THE "PONIES" IN TURN.......
