NAME
Charles Sheppard

Sydney Academy

Uniform Number
11, because Caldwell Jones had the same number and he played for the NBA team the Philadelphia 76’ers and he was best known because he was a defensive specialist and I tried to emulate him for this reason.
Coach

Greg MacNeil, Charles “Chickey” MacMaster

Fond Memory
We played in Antigonish at the Oland Center right before an X/Acadia University game. It was a great atmosphere and the Oland Center is such a great gym!
Has basketball/sports helped you in your life?
Playing basketball made me work hard! I wasn’t the greatest ball player but the game taught me a lot about the importance of team work. I was a hard worker on the court! As the saying goes, there’s no “I” in team. I liked how my teammates depended on me and I could depend on my teammates too! This was a great feeling to be able to rely on your teammates to pick up your slack if you made a mistake. Deciding on playing basketball was an important decision for me because it kept me from making bad decisions off the court! Basketball taught me discipline. Basketball kept me on the straight and narrow. Basketball gave me direction! I learned that you can do anything if you put your mind to it. I was able to stay in shape and improve my game the more that I played it!
Have you played basketball after high school?
  • I played at UCCB in 1981 even though I was set to play at Dalhousie.
  • I coached the Sydney Academy JV and AAA teams, and what I appreciated most about coaching was the acknowledgement that I received from the players and parents after I had been away from coaching. I wasn't doing it for this reason but it was nice to hear that I made a lasting impression on someone's life, in a positive way.
  • And I am currently one of the oldest competitors participating in the Simon Chaisson Alumni Tournament, which I take great pride in!
