Ports America Collaborates With Sydney Harbour Group

Ports America and Sydney Harbour Investment Partners (SHIP) have agreed to form a development group that will attract new customer and investor relationships and advise on the operational configuration of the Novaportemarine container facility in Nova Scotia.

SHIP has development rights to approximately 500 acres in the Port of Sydney where the construction of Novaporte will take place over the next two years with the support of Ports America, the largest US terminal operator. The semi-automated, deep-water marine container facility will have the capacity to handle 18,000+ TEU vessels and Ports America is set to manage and operate the terminal for 40 years, providing services such as full stevedore and terminal labor management, terminal operating systems, and maintenance and repair.

Harbour Port Development Partners changed the name and removed Sheshy as director. Same crew...nothing new its all dependent on finding enough ships, so far they have none. Until they maximize customers (ships) nothing will happen. Smoke and mirrors

The Herald quoted Sheehy stating the following: "Sydney Harbour Investment Partners consists of the partners from the previous firm in charge of promoting the project, Harbour Port Development Partners, and some new ones, such as Canderel Developments of Montreal., and others who Sheehy declined to name." I would suggest it might be important for our CBRM council to have disclosure on all partners involved. We should never be dealing blindly. These decisions are too costly to make without full due diligence. With the Whalley lawsuit already alleging a conflict of interest related to some aspects of port business, that would be an additional indication of why it's so important to ensure that we demand full disclosure. We must avoid the inclination to be less scrutinizing even as more reputable stakeholders emerge. In fact, we should be more so, as we'll be faced with far more sophisticated corporate operations with resources and expertise we simply cannot rival. They serve the best interests of their shareholders, first and foremost. We fall into the classification as a stakeholder who has ownership over a resource. Corporations don't arrive with the intent of rebuilding local economies, regardless of what their public relations and communications reps tell us. There is now a proposition being floated that the CBRM council will be asked to grant a 5-year extension to the current 2-year port marketing contract in a rushed move, with some councillors suggesting that they haven't been given sufficient information beforehand as to what is being planned. So perhaps before we extend contracts by a month, much less 5 years, we should know exactly who the partners actually are in newly re-branded operations like SHIP (Sydney Harbour Investment Partners), formerly HPDP (Harbor Port Development Partners).

Find it interesting that they talk as if they have a ready and working rail line . It's decaying every day . When was the last time a 50 car long train crossed the Causeway ?? We should have a contest . Send in a photo of a moving freight train you saw today !!!!.

If a shipper(s) is found and the terminal construction starts the current railway could be brought up to standards rather quickly. Although the surface rust on rails look ugly, it is simply that surface rust, it doesn't take away from the fact that the rails were lightly used since installed in the late 80's and still have 20 years life left in them (with the exception of the odd bad rail). A railway tie gang can replace miles of ties per day. If this terminal happens the railway will be rebuilt long before the terminal is ready for the first ship to arrive. G&W has been in a state where they could have applied to abandon the line since last April, they haven't because it is in their best interest if this port happens. G&W knows it won't happen if they pull up the tracks. On top of that with the amendments to the railway act they would be responsible to re-mediate the railway properties, which is a huge expense and could potentially cost more then the salvage value of the rail line. As for your contest, I saw an Sydney Coal Railway train today, does that qualify? ;)

Rebuilding the railway will cost $150 million+ unless you intend to send a train across bridges and trestles that were built in 1888.

Most rail bridges/trestles in North America are just as old if not older then the bridges on the Sydney to Truro line. Railways do not replace bridges unless it is absolutely necessary and usually opt to rebuild exiting structures. Although the bridges on our line are old they can safely handle a train at reduced speeds (like many rail bridges in North America) and would only require minimal work to increase the their service life. The rail reports mentioned some of the costs which totaled around 5+ million dollars for bridge work.

My understanding is that rail is not part of the solution. The plan is to bring in the super ships, offload the containers on the Greenfields site, and then load them back onto smaller container ships that can get into ports in New York, New Jersey, etc. Which is why the ILA is supporting the concept, as their members operate those ports.

Rail will still be part of the solution along with highways, even if the bulk is ship to ship there will always be a percentage that will travel other modes. At today's port meeting rail was included in the equation.

Todays port meeting really did not say anything of substance. Council is not even up to speed...they found out on news like everyone else. They should not note this through until they are given adequate research time. They are expected to vote thursday...no time to review as they were given nothing...like last time Cecil trying to push it through with no details
