Sail Nova Scotia Honours the Best at Annual Awards

Sail Nova Scotia celebrated a wonderful year on and off the water at its annual awards held Saturday, November 21 in a ceremony in Halifax following the annual Sail Nova Scotia Atlantic Sailing Conference.

Based on the tremendous success that Race the Cape was not only this year, but in past years, and the impact it has made on sailing, the Sail Nova Scotia Board of Directors was pleased to announce that Race the Cape was selected as the Regatta of the Year award winner for 2015!

Capturing the Sailor of the Year award was Peter Wickwire who had a great year capturing just about every race he entered with his team including Chester Race Week and the US Match Racing Invitational Regatta.

Winning the Female Sailor of the Year was the 49erFX team of Erin Rafuse and Danielle Boyd. Earlier on Saturday they qualified Canada to a berth at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Male Sailor of the Year went to Henry Demone whose year was highlighted by a 3rd place finish at the Sonar World Championships.

Female Youth Sailors of the Year were Georgia Lewin-LaFrance and Terra Lanteigne who won the 420 Youth Nationals and qualified to represent Canada at the 2015 Youth Worlds in December in Malaysia. Male Youth Sailor of the Year was Luke Ruitenberg who continues to be one of the top single-handed dinghy sailors in the province.

Official of the Year was Ray CambriaInstructor of the Year was Max Page with Federico Lopez winning Coach of the Year.

New this year was the President's Award to recognize someone who has made an outstanding contribution to the sport over many years. This year's winner was Mike Archibald.

Volunteer of the Year winner was Michael O'Connor who has contributed greatly to the Learn to Sail program success at Lunenburg Yacht Club.

Legacy Award recipients were Henry Machum and Luke Ruitenberg, while Kate Pepler was recognized with the WOW! Women on Water Award for leaderhsip in female sailing in Nova Scotia.

If you are available during Race The Cape, be sure to drop into the nearest yacht club that is hosting. I volunteer every year and this event is loads of fun. There is dancing, food, and you get to meet great people.It is an event to check out for sure.
