Some residents of Reserve Mines in Cape Breton took to Facebook to raise concerns about a local property that is accumulating trash and debris. They stated additional concerns about smoke and fumes when the debris is burned so close in proximity to homes in the neighbourhood. Some who commented also alleged that old cars and other materials may have been buried there.
The site is located near the water tower in Reserve Mines off of Atlantic Drive. Comments from other residents to the Facebook post suggest that the area has been an issue for decades and may be situated on CBRM-owned land.
The commenters claim that the CBRM has known about the issue for years without taking steps to compel a clean up of the site. They say that CBRM Councillor Darren Bruckschwaiger has been notified again and they are hopeful that he will take action.
"These pics were taken and posted by a concerned Mom of a 3yr old. She is trying to raise awareness of the situation and the toxic fumes everytime the garbage is set on fire here in Reserve Mines. What you're seeing here is just a small portion of the garbage and waste. Please "Share" and help support her while she takes a stand for our community."
Here is a video of the site shared by the Cape Breton Environmental Conservation Association:
