New co-directors Drs. Rod Beresford and Alana Pindar celebrate major partnership for environmental research and community collaboration
Cape Breton University (CBU) is proud to announce a generous gift from the Bras d’Or Nature Trust to support the work of the Bras d’Or Institute, a leading centre for research, collaboration and conservation focused on the Bras d’Or Lake and its surrounding ecosystems.
This timely donation coincides with the recent appointment of Drs. Rod Beresford and Alana Pindar as co-directors of the Institute. Both scientists bring strong records in applied, community-focused research and a deep commitment to protecting Atlantic Canada’s ecological heritage.
“This generous gift from the Bras d’Or Nature Trust will allow us to deepen our impact across Unama’ki,” says Dr. Pindar. “We’re excited to expand research opportunities and work closely with communities who have long cared for these lands and waters.”
“The Trust’s commitment to conservation and community aligns perfectly with our goals,” adds Dr. Beresford. “Their support ensures we can build innovative, student-led research programs that reflect the values and needs of this unique region.”
The donation will enhance the Institute’s capacity in climate change research, biodiversity monitoring, acoustic ecology and land-based knowledge sharing while also supporting meaningful student training opportunities rooted in place.
The directors of the Trust say they are enthusiastic about this new chapter of collaboration. “The Bras d’Or Lake has always been more than a body of water—it’s a living system that ties together communities, cultures and ecosystems,” says Clair Rankin. “This partnership helps ensure that the knowledge and care needed to protect it will thrive for generations.”
Henry Muggah added that the timing is right, and the leadership is strong. “We’re proud to support the Bras d’Or Institute’s mission of sustainability through science, education and Indigenous collaboration,” he says.
The Bras d’Or Nature Trust was created in 1993 with a mandate of acquiring conservation easements. Over the decades, the Trust has contributed to the successful acquisitions of more than 2000 acres of waterfront lands. This collaboration will enable continued success and new opportunities.
“This is about legacy,” adds Rollie Thornhill. “The work being done at the Institute represents the kind of long-term thinking the Bras d’Or needs and deserves.”
