The company is undertaking a new expansion project in Debert, Nova Scotia, to build a new solar-powered production facility as the current facility is at capacity.
Maritime Gourmet Mushrooms will be proceeding with a $4,123,600 capital investment to support growth of mushrooms and mushroom substrate sales in the Northeast United States, Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia. The company expects the new facility will add capacity to produce an additional 60,000 lbs/week of the mushroom substrate with new rooms to grow up to 10,000 lbs/week of fresh mushrooms. The new solar system facility will offset grid demand by 327,000 kWh/year.
Maritime Gourmet Mushrooms has previously been awarded a grant from the Clean Foundation of Nova Scotia for its use of mushroom substrates and the contributions to the circular economy in the forestry industry. The chief input for the substrate is sawdust gathered from local Maritime lumber mills. The spent substrate is sold to gardeners and farmers as a high-quality soil amendment. Growing the company’s production through this expansion project will allow Maritime Gourmet Mushrooms to play an even larger role in Nova Scotia’s circular economy.
