CAPE BRETON — 2022 marks the 95th year for the historic Savoy Theatre. Thanks to the support of many and despite significant challenges, the historic Savoy has served Cape Breton as an entertainment showplace for nearly a century. It has hosted hundreds of stars and has been home to spectacular productions, yet, it owes much of its success and stability to home-grown talent and local supporters.

Sitting at the heart of downtown Glace Bay, the Savoy is a vital component of our island, spurring innovation across the creative economy; acting as a training ground for past, present and future performers, technicians, students and tradespeople. It is a unique, Victorian-style, 761-seat theatre, with an attached performance lobby space, in which to create, foster, grow and share art and culture.

The board of directors, management and staff are working to sustain the Savoy into the future. They are asking those who are lovers of the arts, Savoy patrons, businesses, and artists alike, to show support by making a donation of $95; one dollar for every year the building has been in operation. The Savoy will issue charitable tax receipts for all donations.

Pam Leader, Executive Director of the Savoy Theatre said there’s no building quite like it, “The Savoy becomes an instant favourite to those who are lucky enough to experience it, and it’s on the bucket list of many others. We’re working to ensure it’ll be around for 100 years and beyond, so it can always be accessed as a source of joy.” she said. “If you have the means to do so, please consider donating.”

The Savoy Theatre has contributed positively to our communities for nearly a century. The recent lockdowns and social distancing regulations have highlighted the importance of accessing culture and entertainment and the necessity of social interaction. Your donation ensures the continuation of those shared experiences within the walls of one of the most beautiful theatres in Canada. The Savoy Theatre is on the road to 100 years.
