Cape Breton N.S. – It’s showtime! Management and staff at the Savoy Theatre are more than a little excited to announce the official reopening of Cape Breton’s Entertainment Showplace, with a stellar line-up of performances. 

On October 21, 2021 the historic Savoy will welcome back audiences with a very special performance; a tribute to one of Canada’s most-beloved songwriters, Rita MacNeil. Dear Rita is described as a love-letter to a true fixture of Canadian culture, whose songs were international hits. Developed closely with the family of the late singer herself, this cabaret musical weaves Rita’s own lyrics into new perspectives and invites her spirit into the room. Featuring a cast of six, with a script written by Mike Ross and Lindsay Kyte. Directed by the highly acclaimed Ron Jenkins, the performance will run October 21 - 24, 2021 at 7pm. Tickets for Dear Rita are $59.50 and will be on sale Thursday, September 16 at 10 a.m., with limited seating available. Visit the Savoy website for more details. 

But first, audiences will have the opportunity to experience “The Good Ground”, with a CD release performance by singer/songwriter; Jenn Sheppard. Jenn will perform her entire CD collection, backed by a twelve-piece, all-star band, composed of some of Cape Breton’s finest musicians. Additionally, the performance will include a segment from Cape Breton’s own Garbage Night Sessions trio with special guest Jordyn Crocker (and yes, there may even be a contest!). The night will be hosted by Bette MacDonald and Maynard Morrison. One show only. Limited seating available. Show date: Wednesday, September 29, 2021 at 7pm. Tickets are $37.50 and go on sale Monday, September 13, 2021 at 10 a.m.  

Savoy Theatre Executive Director Pam Leader is relieved, “Up until now, it wasn’t possible for us to put on shows and remain fiscally responsible. Now that we’re able to accommodate more people, we’ll be announcing a full list of upcoming shows. We cannot wait to raise up that red curtain again and again,” she said.

The Savoy Theatre management and staff have put the past year to good use, deep cleaning and getting the space ready for patrons and will follow all current Nova Scotia Health Authority guidelines.
