School Closures Announced for Cape Breton Victoria

NEWS RELEASE

SCHOOL REVIEW DECISIONS

The Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board  (the ‘Board’) has made the decisions regarding which schools will permanently close as per the School Review process in accordance with the Education Act.  At a Public Board meeting held at Riverview Rural High School this evening, the School Board has directed that the following public schools be permanently closed:

  •  Bridgeport School closes with the P-5 students moved to John Bernard Croak VC Memorial and the 6-8 students moved to Oceanview Education Centre effective September, 2016
  •  East Bay School closes with the students moved to Mountainview School effective September, 2016
  •  Florence Elementary School closes with the students moved to Dr. T.L. Sullivan (P-8) effective September, 2017
  •  George D. Lewis School closes with the students moved to Riverside Elementary School in a Grade Primary to Eight configuration. The decision on the timeline will be determined after the receipt of the Hub School report due by June 1, 2016
  •  Gowrie Memorial School closes with the students moved to Donkin School effective September 1, 2016
  •  Harbourside Elementary closes with the students moved in a grade primary to eight configuration to Whitney Pier Memorial Middle School effective September, 2020
  •  MacDonald Elementary School closes with the students moved to Tompkins Memorial School effective September, 2016
  •  MacLennan Middle School closes with the students moved to Malcolm Munroe Memorial Middle School effective September, 2016
  •  Mira Road Elementary closes with the P-5 students moved to Shipyard Elementary effective September, 2016
  •  Mount Carmel Elementary School closes with the students moved to Greenfield Elementary School  effective September, 2016
  •  Seton Elementary School closes with the students moved to Ferrisview Elementary School by July 31, 2021
  •  Sherwood Park Education Centre closes effective September, 2020 with the students moving to Brookland Elementary School in a 6-8 configuration.
  •  St. Agnes Elementary School closes with the students moved to Greenfield Elementary effective September, 2016
  •  St. Joseph Elementary School closes with the students moved to Jubilee Elementary School effective September, 2016
  •  Sydney Mines Middle School closes by July 31, 2021 and the French Immersion program at Sydney Mines Middle School to move to Dr. T.L. Sullivan on September, 2016
  •  Thompson Middle School closes with the 6-8 students moved to Sydney Mines Middle School effective  September, 2016
  •  Tompkins Memorial Elementary School  closes by July 31, 2021
  •  The French Immersion program at Whitney Pier Memorial Middle School to be moved to a reconfigured Brookland Middle School on September 1, 2020.

 

The Board further passed motions to request from the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development the following:

  •  A new elementary School for the Glace Bay Family of Schools replacing MacDonald Elementary School and Tompkins Memorial School School.
  •  A new Middle School for the Northside Family of Schools replacing Sydney Mines Middle School and Thompson Middle School.

The Board has directed staff to initiate the process of implementing Transition plans as soon as possible.

The board once again acknowledges the tremendous effort and countless hours that the School Options Committees dedicated to these difficult decisions.
