With hours into spring, Second Wind Community Band is ready to welcome the season with its first-ever Pops Concert!
Having continued to rehearse on-line throughout COVID as well as in person when they could, band members are excited to play again for a live audience. The anticipation of spring’s arrival and the longer daylight it brings lifts all spirits and offers renewed energy, so it is a fitting time to share this through music.
Pops concerts have a long history within music, and conductor Laura Mercer says that “The musical repertoire for this concert will include delightful pop pieces from the Elizabethan era to well-liked television melodies, favourites from the ‘90s, and we can’t forget the beautiful and popular Cape Breton tunes.”
With the Band’s philosophy “Music for Life”, members have chosen to support the Hospice Palliative Care Music Therapy program (not for the first time), which is a special and multi-faceted experience planned together with the patient and Music Therapist, Jill Murphy. March is also Music Therapy month so the partnership of Second Wind with Hospice Palliative Care speaks to a shared outlook of adding life to days for patients, families and the broader community.
Jane Lewis, Board Chair for the Hospice Palliative Care Society, adds that “This continuing partnership between Second Wind Community Band and the Society is one that is very important to patients and families making the end-of-life journey more comforting for the patient and creating meaningful legacies for family members.”
This Pops Concert will be held at CBU’s Boardmore theatre at 7:30 pm on Wednesday, March 22nd.
Tickets are $20 for adults and $5 for students and children. Contact any band member or visit the Cape Breton Curiosity Shop at 296 Charlotte St. for tickets. Some will also be available at the Hospice Cape Breton Office at 6 Charles Herney Atwi (St.)
