Shellfish Ban - Fisheries and Oceans Canada

Shellfish Closure Update August 14,2015

DFO spokesman Lorne Penny has provided the following update:

"The August 11th closure is a result of the significant rainfall deposited earlier this week in certain areas of eastern Nova Scotia. The closure prohibits the harvest of bi-valve shellfish including all species of clams, quahaugs, mussels, oysters, and all whelks and bay scallops.

The areas affected include: all waters within 3KM of the coastlines and islands of the Maritimes Region eastern portion of Nova Scotia and Cape Breton, including the Bras d’Or Lake and the counties of Guysborough, Richmond, Victoria, Inverness, and the Cape Breton Regional Municipality.

The closure will remain in effect until Environment Canada and/or the Canadian Food Inspection Service recommends to Fisheries & Oceans Canada (DFO) that the areas can re-open. Once DFO has received the EC and CFIA recommendations a decision will be made with respect to the opening of locations/areas affected by this closure.

As you can appreciate, the consumption of shellfish harvested from closed areas poses a significant risk to public health; eating contaminated shellfish can cause severe illness or can even be life threatening."
