Spark Cape Breton is a competition to find and support high potential, early stage technology companies, and encourage entrepreneurial activity in the region.‎ It is presented by Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and Innovacorp.

Entrants must be a start-up venture based in Cape Breton or the Mulgrave area. They must have a new knowledge-based product or service with zero sales revenue since inception.

The third edition of the Spark competition attracted 28 submissions by June’s deadline. Eleven companies were invited to pitch their ventures to judges in mid-August. The shortlisted companies also participated ‎in several start-up training sessions in recent weeks, including workshops on how to make a pitch, the lean-canvas approach for building a business plan, as well as financial accounting specific to their business.

An eight-person judging committee selected the winners after evaluating the quality of the product or service, the strength of the management team, and the clarity and persuasiveness of the written and oral presentation. Ultimately, entries were judged on which had the highest probability of entering the market in a competitively sustainable fashion and on commercial potential.

Congrats to all Spark Cape Breton, Round III winners. Major props to UIT Startups! The very first class of graduates has definitely proven to be very successful, with huge hits in this latest Spark CB round. IMO, this represents a distinct transition from previous rounds of Spark which was comprised of larger representation from more established local serial entrepreneurs, their close connections, and familiar names. We definitely need to keep flooding the local startup ecosystem with new blood and new concepts to see what takes hold. TechLink was a major loss to our tech scene in terms of employment, but we're in a new era now where startups have the potential to take off without continual gov funding intervention at such a large scale. We need our Spark CB alum to produce another MediaSpark, Marcato, or Protocase - all small startups with uber smart teams and great potential for long term revenue-based self sustainability. Each of them are job creation engines! And while we're building those kinds of successes, we may get lucky and discover another GoInstant or beyond somewhere within the mix! :)

This is fantastic stuff. I'm not sure 'entrepreneur' was a word heard often in CB 10 or 20 years ago. Now it's just part of the newest generation's DNA.
