The Simon Chiasson Alumni Basketball Tournament (“The Simon”) is one of the largest ALUMNI basketball tournaments in Canada. Held at various venues in Cape Breton since 2012, The Simon completed its 6th successful tournament this past March 2017.
- The tournament has grown from 6 teams to 23 teams and 3 divisions.
- High schools from Newfoundland, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia were represented.
- Over 200 players from across the country come to play for their alumni high schools.
- Nearly 30 sponsors now support the event.
Men Under 35 – Ronnie Shaw Division
Corner Brook Regional High School from Newfoundland won the tournament with a 75 to 55 win over Memorial High School Team #1 from North Sydney. This was Corner Brook’s first appearance at The Simon.

Women – Debbie Ruiz Division
Sydney Academy won the tournament with a 62 to 51 win over Riverview High School. This was Sydney Academy’s first win after appearing in the finals twice in previous years.

Men 35 & Over – Eddie Lawless Division
Pictou County won the tournament with a 61 – 47 win over Antigonish.
