FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - TODAY IS THE DAY - MEN OF THE DEEPS MARK 50th ANNIVERSARY DATE - NOVEMBER 01
“They sing working songs because they are working men.”
On November 1, 1966, a group of singing miners performed their very first concert, to a sold-out audience, at the soon-to-be 90 year old Savoy Theatre. HAPPY 50th ANNIVERSARY to Cape Breton's MEN OF THE DEEPS!
For fifty years, the Men of the Deeps (MOD) , North America’s only coal miners chorus, have been travelling the world as Canadian Ambassadors, and their shift isn’t over yet. But these men are used to being on their feet; they have stood with thumbs firmly planted in their belts, to deliver hundreds of emotional performances, on large and small stages; in churches and stadiums; at private conventions and community celebrations; on radio and on television. They share with us a glimpse of what life was like as a miner in a mining town; preserving our folklore, culture and history. The tales they tell are authentic; not stories they’ve heard, but stories they’ve lived. These melodic miners have stood beside some of the biggest names in the business and have left their mark as far away as The People’s Republic of China. Through sheer determination and the on-going support of their audiences, the Men of the Deeps have stood the test of time.
For fifty years, the coal miner’s choir has never looked back. They have pushed on, through a changing landscape, singing the songs of the workers, telling the stories and teaching the lessons. When the idea was first born, no one could have predicted the choir would become such an important part of the story of Cape Breton, and certainly, no one would have guessed that it would persevere for over half a century.
In celebration of this milestone, the MEN OF THE DEEPS will be embarking on a Maritime tour taking them to Glace Bay, New Waterford, Sydney, Truro, Moncton, PEI, Wolfville, Bridgewater and Antigonish. For tour information, please visit menofthedeeps.com
