Town House Bonspiel Raises Funds For Glace Bay Meals On Wheels

The Town House Citizens Service League held a fundraising bonspiel at the Schooner Curling Club in Sydney on January 24th and 25th. Bonspiel proceeds went to support the Glace Bay Meals On Wheels program, which provides nutritious meals to people who are unable to make their own.

"This was a great inaugural event," said Executive Director Ed Beaton. "We raised nearly $3,000 for Meals On Wheels, and I want to thank Schooner Curling Club and their members for their support and unbelievable hospitality. We hope to make this an annual fundraiser." 

Ten teams participated in the first Town House Bonpiel, which saw a mix of new and experienced curlers of all ages in a 2-day format which emphasized fun over competition. A new trophy was made for the spiel by Glace Bay artist Bernie Hart, who is the brother-in-law of Olympic gold-medalist Mark Kennedy.

Townhouse offers a wide number of programs to the communities of Glace Bay and area, including a nursery school, summer camps, backpacks for school-aged kids, scholarships for university students, pre-employment programs, volunteer-screening, various courses (including babysitting, safe boating, and first aid), furniture exchange, clothing depot, a winter coat drive in the fall, seniors contact, seniors brunch, seniors expo, and Meals On Wheels. There are approximately 200 volunteers associated with the various activities of Townhouse, and clients in one program may be volunteers in another.
