The Cape Breton Highlanders picked up their second consecutive win in a match-up with the Windsor Express last night. Without Hank Thorns, Austin Witter and Chadrack Lufile in the line up, the Highlanders relied on other players to step up.
Newcomer Anthony Walker stepped up in a big way for the Highlanders with 10 points and 6 rebounds in 23 minutes of action. All 10 of his points came from dunks and the San Antonio, Texas native gave the Centre 200 crowd quite the introduction.
Walker's first points as a Highlander came off of an impressive set-up from Chad Frazier and electrified the crowd at Centre 200. However, it was his next big play that truly showed Highlanders fans what he was capable of.
Walker's second dunk of the afternoon might be the Highlanders' best play of the season. He put Express big man Nick Evans on a poster with a vicious dunk that inspired an exchange between Evans and Charles Mann.
Early in the second half, Walker shook Centre 200 with another slam almost as audacious as the last one. This time, Quinnell Brown was the victim as Walker cocked back and hammered home another poster dunk.
Walker's final two dunks of the afternoon were great feats of athleticism. Late in the third quarter, Walker made a one-handed catch to slam it home off a tough pass from Shaquille Keith. Later on in the fourth quarter, Walker flew up to the rafters to grab an alley-oop pass from Booker Woodfox before finishing in front of a pumped up crowd.
The Express were unable to stop the pick-and-roll with Walker all night and it resulted in the most exciting 10 points you can ask for in a basketball game. We'll see if the rest of the league has an answer for the deadly pick-and-roll during the Highlanders upcoming road trip. Cape Breton travels to Saint John for a match-up with the Riptide at 7 p.m. on Friday.
