What CBRM Council May Tell You....

If a CBRM council member or Rail Trail steering committee member tells you that Multi-Use trail means ATVs are permitted, it is a false statement. It's been tried on me, so with this article, I want to make sure that this deception stops.

It is well known all over Canada (and the US), as shown in the attached image, that multi-use has nothing to do with off-road vehicles. A trail that permits off-road vehicles such as ATVs is called an ATV trail. End of story.

I can not yet find any reasonable public mention by council or the Rail Trail steering committee, that there would be an ATV trail built right through the backyards of residents along the trail. So, is Active Transportation budget ($330,000 per year for 20 years) being used for committees and meetings and open house events and surveys for a trail that was never intended to be an Active Transportation trail?

Great info, Joseph. At some point, I'd like to go back and check out the Council video to see these presentations.

The Great Trail, (formerly the Trans Canada), had been completed all across Canada before they arrived at the borders of CBRM. There, thanks to the obstinacy of Cecil Clarke & his phantasmagorical belief in the container terminal (at least as a re-election strategy :) and the Province's (read McNeil & MacLellan), lack of intestinal fortitude, they were stymied. They would have invested, remediated and used the CB&CNS railbed to continue the Trail to North Sydney, with offshoots to connect to other existing Trails. Instead, they had to develop a 'water route', with 7 different embarkation points, starting at Orangedale, which will never be used routinely. The vast majority of the Great Trail operates as a Greenway and does not allow motorized vehicles. In CB, we are already crisscrossed with ATV and snowmobile trails, and many unused roads that have been designated for that use. And although the ATV and Snowmobile Clubs are generally courteous and positive economically, we simply do not need more motorized trails. However, CB Tourism would benefit greatly from a continuation of the Trail, and the resulting development along the unused railbed. In addition, there would be $15-20 million of residential development, which is currently blocked by CB&CNS's outrageous 'crossing fees', even as the NS Govt continues to 'subsidize' them.
