When Did We Become Such Horrible People?

Just when I think society as a whole has reached its lowest point, some people take it as a challenge to prove just how low they really can sink.

When did we become such horrible people?

Some people have such a high sense of entitlement these days that they not only believe their beauty sleep is more important than a child’s life, but they’ll also publicly announce and defend their position.

To everyone who complained that the amber alert for 11-year old Riya woke them from their slumber, you might as well stop complaining… no amount of beauty sleep will help you because you’re ugly on the inside.

Hundreds of calls flooded the 911 system to complain about the alert. Let’s ponder that for a moment… for an amber alert to be issued means that a young child’s life is in imminent danger, and these people felt they were entitled to flood the system with complaints because it woke them up? One of those 911 calls was an actual tip that led the police to find the missing girl, but the vast majority of calls were to complain that the alert was disturbing them, or as the woman said in her post to social media, that the police made a dick move issuing the alert because it woke her baby. At least her child woke up - the child that went missing will never wake again because the father murdered her.

She was only murdered, I guess that's not a real emergency. The complaints kept coming in and people kept defending their position with tweets claiming: “Amber alerts are an invasion of privacy” and listed several reasons why she felt it was an invasion of privacy. Who the hell do these people think they are? A child’s life is in danger for crying out loud! Being triggered by loud sounds, insomnia or whatever excuse you can come up with will never be as important as the life of a child who is in danger. How dare you think otherwise!

We are not partners in policing? So what you’re really saying is that if your child or loved one goes missing and your neighbours have information that will lead the police to find them, you’d be quite content with your neighbour withholding that information because they’re not a partner in policing? That’s okay with you because you’d rather your loved one die because your neighbour doesn’t work for the police?

I wonder how those complainers will sleep at night knowing the child was murdered?

It pains me to say this, but some of them will be sleeping just fine because “heartless” is not a strong enough description of these people. One person wrote: “If fathers got better custody... things like this would not happen… hope the mom sleeps well at night.”

That’s okay… I said “WTF?” when I read his post too.

He knows it was the father so therefore he knows the child was murdered by her father, so he decides to use this horrible tragedy as a pedestal to complain about fathers needing better custody? He then blames the mother by saying: “Things like this would not happen. Hope the mom sleeps well at night.”
Her daughter was just murdered so no, she is not sleeping well at night! She is probably screaming in agony because her heart has just been ripped apart. As disgusting as your comment is, I hope you never have to go through what that poor woman is going through right now.

I think every person who called 911 to complain about the amber alert should be fined for misuse of the emergency system and charged with hindering a police investigation or whatever charges apply. Yes, people get emotional when they’re upset; yes people say and do stupid things they later regret and so on… but… what if someone was calling for emergency medical attention but the dispatchers were tied up listening to people whine about an alert? Is that not endangering someone’s life? Unless they are taught a lesson, these people will repeat their pathetic behaviour the next time an amber alert needs to be issued.

I find it ironic that these people wouldn't mind a smoke detector or a fire alarm waking them from their precious sleep when their house is on fire, but if it’s only the life of someone else’s innocent child at risk, they don’t need some stupid alarm going off when they’re trying to sleep.

I also hope they never need an amber alert for their child, but if they do, I hope that as a society we have matured so they are not treated with the same despicable behaviour that they exhibited during this crisis. They should all be ashamed of themselves.

I wonder if they would be equally concerned if they called 911 in the mid morning and their neighbors were waken by emergency vehicals from their own house? Wouldn't all of those arguments apply equally here?

For many nowadays, a wireless phone is their only phone, and turning them off would not be an option as there could be a family emergency. I don't think people should, in general, be upset with an interruption for one of the most important reasons we could imagine in society - a call for help for a child at risk. But, generally speaking, there are probably many different household dynamics where an unexpected alert could create some issues. In some places, non-emergency calls to 911 would itself be an offence. So, for those who used that way to complain about it, certainly weren't making a good wise decision. There are enrollment systems that allow for opt-in only where a person specifically has to give permission. There are also systems (that might be better in this case) where people are enrolled automatically, but then have the ability to opt-out - if it's important for them to do so for some reason.

They complain about Amber Alert woke their child up.....I wonder if it happened to them that their child went missing if they would request that the police NOT send out an Amber Alert because it would disturbe too many people?

Thanks for sharing the link to the McLean's article - it's one of the many I have read in regards to the fallout from the amber alert that was issued.
