Whitney Pier Music Foundation Looking for Aspiring Musicians

Whitney Pier Music Foundation Looking for Aspiring Musicians

The Whitney Pier Music Foundation (WPMF) is a non-profit group of professional musicians and sound technicians that have come together to mentor aspiring music students of all ages.  WPMF is based out of Menelik Hall in Whitney Pier, and is inspired by the rich musical heritage of the local community.

A unique focus of WPMF is helping aspiring musicians learn the art of Live-Stage Performance with other musicians.

WPMF provides a supportive learning environment where instructors and students meet 2 times a week at Menelik Hall. Activities include

  • Small-group Student/Instructor teaching sessions
  • Jam sessions
  • Dress rehearsals
  • Live showcases
  • Specialized workshops on topics such as sound, lights, and stage prep.

WPMF has held a number of live student-performance showcases at Menelik Hall.   Most notable from the last session was an impromptu performance by Hubba Parris (lead singer for Spyder), where the audience was treated to a stirring version of Stand By Me by Hubba and his niece, Catherine Green.  Catherine is one of the first students to join WPMF and continues to work on her craft within the group.

Students selected to enroll in WPMF pay no fees, as 100% funding is awarded through a scholarship selection process.  Limited space is available, and new students are scheduled to start in September.  There is no cost for new students to apply or enroll.

Students must have an INTERMEDIATE level of competence in their instrument of choice.  Instruction is available in bass, guitar, percussion, vocals, keyboards, sound/lighting tech, sound for musicians, and lights.

Information about the instructors, training offered, and how new students can apply to enroll in the program can be found on the WPMF website at WhitneyPierMusic.com/Curriculum.  Students selected to enroll in the program will receive scholarships covering 100% of the membership costs.

Initial funding of WPMF has been generously provided by African Nova Scotia Affairs.  A key long-term goal of the Foundation is to help spark the revival of the music community in Whitney Pier.  The WPMF website will eventually include historical content that highlights the musical talent that was a part of the Whitney Pier community.
