Will Mayor McDougall Quit?—E47 [VIDEO]

Episode 47 of a Cape Breton Podcast with Joe Ward, Boxer Shorts Media.

Mayor McDougall-Merrill told the Cape Breton Post that she was not yet decided if she would run again for mayor of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. Does her lack of decisiveness show a leadership weakness that could set us up to miss out on quality candidates in the next CBRM election? Who else might be in the on-deck circle?

It should be no shock to anyone who watches local politics that the mayor can't make a decision.Like municipal issues, just kick the can down the road. That's how city hall operates.

If she announced her intention to serve only one term, it would set people scrambling to speak with and prepare other candidates. The last thing we want is a surprise that she's not re-offering 60 days out from the election. It's a big choice, and smart candidates would be working on their campaign right now. If Clarke's running, it's almost a certainty he's preparing now. He knows how this game works.

I was a fan of hers when she was a councillor but ever since she sat in the mayor's seat city hall has been in turmoil. She has absolutely no leadership skills.Gotta go.

My pending report card won't be declaring her a valedictorian, by any stretch of the imagination. :) My video focuses on the risks of her not re-offering, but not giving us time to get better candidates mentally committed to trying, and getting them prepared. However, I think good people should be challenging her, even if she intends to stay in place. I definitely don't want to vote for Cecil Clarke.

If people could put this party politics and the crazy left/right stuff aside since most don't know what they stand for anyway we just might find someone with common sense and connections cuz in the real world good politicians have to know and sometimes learn the hard way how to play politics.Pretty sure folks know who I am talking about and he's from Glace Bay.

CBRM was in worse turmoil before the current administration. The one improvement I had hoped for and I think has happened to some extent is that we don't have the same shady deals. I would rather have no deals than shady deals. I'm not trying to defend the current administration other than to remind us that it was much worse before.

I agree 100%.We need the current mayor to go away and the prior mayor to stay away.I'm not sure about your shady deals comment.I heard from a pretty good source that there's a lot of contract work getting done without tender but that may be in large part,if happening at all, attributed to Senior Administration and Department Managers behind the backs of our elected officials.
Mathew Georghiou Follow Me
Raymond, yes the shady deals that were happening with the previous administration were under the watch of senior officials — and in some cases their support. House cleaning is needed to ensure this stops.

Investigators from the Ombudsman's Office and the Auditor General's Department should have been in there a long time ago. There should be people wearing orange jumpsuits by now.

This is interesting news. I was thinking about posting an article explaining that if anyone new wants to run for council, they need to start working on it now, not 2 months before the election. Incumbents nearly always win because they have name recognition, and you can't build name recognition weeks before an election. You have to start participating in the process immediately by sharing observations and solutions so that you can show people that you are both caring and competent.

Agree, 100%.

Hi Joe, thanks for your post. First correct the name of CB Post reporter, should be Ian Nathason not Nickerson. Thanks go out to Ian for flushing out present council on their intention of re-offering or not. As was noted in article maybe as many as 4 will not re offer, as for the mayor she will decide at her convenience. Tax payers should get engaged CBRM is going through some challenging times so we need the best we can get to man the ship.
Joe Ward My Post Follow Me
Yes, quite regretfully, I used the wrong name. I've already apologized to Ian, but cannot do a correction as the video is finalized and uploaded. These "will you run" articles by Ian are fantastic. Very valuable to have on the public record. They don't get asked to take positions often enough.
