Writing Tip: How to Write Better Dialogue

If there’s one thing in movies that the entire audience will give their attention to at the same time, it’s dialogue. Bad movie dialogue will wreck your screenplay and your film. Great dialogue is what separates your writing from scripts that had potential but failed to deliver that je ne sais quoi that would have made them great. If there’s something missing from an almost great script, it’s most likely realistic dialogue that resonates with the viewers and drives the plot forward.

Really bad dialogue will kill your movie before your well-developed plot even has a chance to hook your viewers because they already stopped watching and moved on to something else. Great dialogue can help mediocre acting, but great actors can’t really do much with bad dialogue. It doesn’t matter how great the idea is, how amazing the plot or characters are, how visually stunning the cinematography is, or anything else for that matter… if the dialogue is bad, the movie is bad.

In my latest blog post, I share some writing tips on how turn expository dialogue into expository scenes, how to avoid over-explaining, and how introducing an outsider can help you add that needed exposition without boring your audience or forcing unrealistic and stale dialogue on your main characters.
