“In the Mists of September” describes the outbreak of World War II, and a Cape Breton farmer’s experience of it. It’s based on the true story of Rod C. MacNeil, who was stationed on a trench line when an officer he didn’t recognize called him to go back to headquarters for his supper. “If you don’t get your supper now, you won’t get it,” the officer said. So he went, and was chided by his commanding officer for abandoning his post. He quickly had his supper, and went back, to find his post obliterated by a German shell. He never found out who the mysterious officer was, and wondered if it had been his guardian angel.
