Robyn Vaughn Cathcart
As a tenor, director, voice teacher, coach, clinician and academic, Mr. Cathcart is a multi-faceted, dynamic and in-demand artist whose thirty-three year career spans the worlds of opera, musical theatre, jazz, pop, concert performance, commercial performance and recording. With over 170 productions, concerts and recital appearances to his credit, he currently serves as Associate Director of the historic Savoy Theatre located in Glace Bay, Cape Breton, NS. In the past, he resided as a member of the Voice Faculty at the Victoria Conservatory of Music (Victoria, BC). Additional tenures in the west have included being Co-Director of the renowned Opera Studio at the VCM, and Artistic Director of the Triple Threat Musical Theatre.
In the mainstream Mr. Cathcart’s work has been seen and heard by hundreds of thousands of people across Canada, the United States and Europe in his collaborations with “The Canadian Tenors” and “Tenore”. A recipient of numerous awards, prizes, grants and scholarships, Mr. Cathcart is also a published author. Additional areas of expertise include design, enhanced performance techniques and yoga.
Upon returning to Cape Breton in the summer of 2012, his first concert “Homeward Bound” received great acclaim from audiences and the press. He has subsequently launched ‘Sing: The Cape Breton Voice Studio’, as is actively teaching/working with many of Cape Breton’s best performers and musicians. In January of 2013, he was contracted by the Savoy Theatre to direct a new full production of “Les Misérables”, kicking-off a Two Million Dollar Capital Campaign for the theatre. Currently, he is directing a new full production of “Chicago”, which will open in May of 2014.
Project-based work includes teaching with Cape Breton University, where has developed/executed pre-professional/professional musical theatre training programs (Summer 2013 & Summer 2014). Mr. Cathcart is also proud and to serve as a consultant for The New Dawn Centre for Social Innovation (Sydney, NS).
From Springhill, Nova Scotia, Ross moved to Sydney, Cape Breton in the fall of 1991 and began working in the Cape Breton Hospitality sector. Ross has worked in Food and Beverage for major chains Delta and Days Inn as well as creating/launching the catering department for the Membertou Trade and Convention Center. In 2003 his focus switched to sales and he joined the Cambridge Suites Sydney as Sales and Revenue Manager.
In 2011 Ross created “The Red Diner” an upscale diner concept for Days Inn and saw the project from concept through renovation and successful launch.
In 2012 Ross formed his own consulting company Hunter Hospitality and Sales Resources and very quickly secured a contact with Destination Cape Breton Association, Cape Breton’s Destination Marketing organization and the governing Tourism body as Sales & Industry Relations representative.
Ross’s association with the entertainment industry began catering events for ECMA’s and Christmas Daddies as well as contracting entertainment for Delta Sydney Hotel.
Areas of business expertise include social media marketing, customer service standards/training, sales plans/techniques, budgeting, event planning, Food and Beverage management and communications.
As a singer Ross has performed on the Christmas Daddies Telethon, and at local venues throughout CBRM including Casino NS. Most recently Ross performed in “Another musical, another show” at the Savoy Theatre and is currently in rehearsals for the Savoy’s production of “Chicago’ in May.
