Joe I'm considering District 3. I would really like to see candidates from all districts post a few of their ideas or opinions on the current situation in the CBRM and their personal vision or direction that they would like to see happen. What decisions that they would like to see reversed. I have several post on here with some of my ideas and opinuons on what has happened and the direction I think we should be headed. We need transparency and open discussion. We also need new ideas. I will put together a post in the next couple of weeks and I would appreciate any new ideas that anyone has especially the candidates . Mr Clarke has given us his 100 so called positive changes, the voters deserve to hear our positive changes, because we badly need change.
Joe Ward My Post Follow Me
Hi Michael, I agree with your suggestions. Great ideas! I think that councillors definitely need to have a platform. The brief Cape Breton Post announcements are entirely insufficient, and unacceptable for those who really want to prove they are fit for the job of serving the citizens of their district and the CBRM as a whole. I've acknowledged even those who gave minimalist responses to the pledge, without demonstrating much thought or effort, and in several cases seemingly reluctant compliance. And though their willingness to respond is appreciated, their lack of effort is duly noted by myself and everyone who reads the responses to the pledge. Note: The pledge itself is a set of baseline principles. It is NOT a platform for any candidate, though the pledge itself or important aspects could be considered a part of an actual platform. Several candidates accepted the pledge without acknowledging how they violate it. If any of you are candidates, and you're not able to provide a platform of 5-10 items that represent the value you offer and the intentions you have for your district and the CBRM, then you might want to reevaluate how effective you can actually be with weak communication skills and an uncertain focus. You all need to start taking this seriously. If you need motivation, look at the out migration statistics for Cape Breton and it's 42.6% child poverty rate. It should act as an equivalent to smelling salts. Michael - If you announced that you are running for District 3, then you'll certainly be one of the top (if not *the* top) candidate for actually getting out there, making your positions known, and consistently offering opportunities for brainstorming and solution finding. I'd love to add you to the list officially. Are you ready to make the jump? :)
Wayne O'Toole Follow Me
I would like to see candidates also post a resume with education and experiences. This is important IMO for voters to be able to see qualifications.
Joe Ward My Post Follow Me
UPDATE: List updated. I've received word that Jim Clark will be challenging for District 3.
Tera Camus Follow Me
Joe; I also hear that former MLA Dave Wilson (former CJCB Talk Back host) will challenge in District 10
Robert Zwarun Follow Me
I'm not sure if people in Bruckschwaiger's district will vote for him again, especially not after he left mid-term to go to Alberta. People want to be assured that the councillor they elect will not only properly represent them, but won't pull up stakes and quit during the term. Say what you will about how great you believe him to be, but when he does something like that, it calls his (and probably ANYBODY'S) credibility into serious question.
Joe Ward My Post Follow Me
With both mayoral candidates announced, the race will start to heat up now. I have received indication that Nadine Bernard will be the first to enter the race challenging Councillor Eldon MacDonald in District #5. Side note: One tremendous positive trend in this election will be the number of strong female candidates in the race. Current council is losing its only two women, with Mae Rowe and Claire Detheridge not reoffering.
Joe Ward My Post Follow Me
A strong challenger to Deputy Mayor George MacDonald has entered the race. His name is Clarence Routledge. He'll be challenging for District #9. He has been the manager of the Bayplex for 18 years, was a councillor in Glace Bay for 20 years, and mayor for 8 years. Note: Councillor MacDonald *acclaimed* his council seat in 2012. This time he will face a significant challenge. Request: If anyone is a contact of Mr. Routledge, please alert him to this topic and the councillors' pledge.
Joe Ward My Post Follow Me
Update: Steve Gillespie is in the race for District #4. He's also developed an actual point-form platform. Development of a platform is essential. People need to know what you stand for and where your focus will be. Props Steve. http://www.stevegillespie.ca/platform.html Side note: I think the public should know if ALL council candidates support a particular mayoral candidate. Because the public has strong feelings about their choices. If any of you has a hard time fessing up who it is you support, then you're not being transparent to your district about what you believe in. I expect very few will be bold enough to acknowledge it, almost almost everyone will play it politically safe.
Joe Ward My Post Follow Me
Update: Tom Wilson has entered the race for District 5, challenging incumbent councillor Eldon MacDonald. Note to all candidates: If you are running and not yet in this list, please contact me.
Joe Ward My Post Follow Me
Update: Darlene Morrison has officially announced that she'll be challenging in District 4.
Joe Ward My Post Follow Me
Update: There is a new challenger in District 1: Duke Pero.
Joe Ward My Post Follow Me
Update: If my quick count is correct, 20 of 29 announced incumbents or challengers have now acknowledged or taken the pledge. A few of the challengers have not been notified (I lack their contact info) and a few have only recently been contacted via Facebook messages (likely to come soon). If you know a councillor that has not responded, please remind/encourage them to do so. Of the 8 incumbent councillors, 6 have responded to the pledge. That leaves only Councillor Kevin Saccary and Councillor Jim MacLeod remaining. Though they have been the subject of criticism in my articles, I would like to remind them that the pledge is a committment to all the residents of their district and of the greater CBRM as well. It's not a response specifically to me, of course, and my other topics are not relevant to whether or not they respond to the pledge.
Joe Ward My Post Follow Me
Update: I have confirmation based on signage in District 3 that Tom Vickers has entered the race. @Tom: Inviting you to take the Councillors' Pledge: https://capebreton.lokol.me/voters-demand-the-cbrm-councillors-pledge
Joe Ward My Post Follow Me
UPDATE: My own name has been added to the list. I'm challenging in District 7. For those of you following this topic, please check out my website at: www.ElectJoeWard.com District 7 includes: The communities of Howie Center, Sydney Forks, Portage, East Bay, Ben Eoin, St. Andrews Channel, Big Pond, Big Pond Center, Middle Cape, Irish Vale, Irish Cove, Enon, Grand Mira North, Grand Mira South, Upper Grand Mira, Gabarus Lake, Gabarus, French Road, Rock Elm, Huntington, Sandfield, Juniper Mountain, Big Ridge, Marion Bridge, Caribou Marsh, Dutch Brook, Mira Road, and that part of the community of Prime Brook south of Highway 125.
Joan O'Connor Follow Me
So happy to hear this!
Joe Ward My Post Follow Me
UPDATE: A candidate who definitely differentiates himself has entered the race for District 3. Andre Desjardins lives in Eskasoni. He proactively communicates via youTube, chronicling his life, exercise and outdoor activities with his children, First Nations topics, cooking, and organic gardening. https://www.facebook.com/andre.lejeunedesjardins
Joe Ward My Post Follow Me
UPDATE: Another exciting candidate has entered the race. Kendra Coombes will be the first challenger to emerge to take on Councillor Cormier in District #11. https://www.facebook.com/KendraCoombesDistrict11/ Note: Ms. Coombes has a Masters in Political Science from Dalhousie University. The strength of the new wave of candidates, particularly the women, is very impressive this year. It's time for change. And voters actually have an opportunity for it being presented to them right now.
Michael MacNeil Follow Me
Joe I completely agree. Maybe something good will result from the past 4 years of bad management. I'm going to be an optimist and predict that if a new team goes in power, you will see some of the bad decisions made in the past four years investigated and reversed.
Joe Ward My Post Follow Me
It's our natural tendency to be very forgiving to those who are our friends, or people that gain likability with us by way of familiarity. That's why change, particularly in gov leadership, is important. Over time, leaders may feel so secure in their jobs that they just coast. And then we see situations like 2013-2016 in the CBRM (aka, the "lost years"). I think you're right. When things just chug along with average hits and misses, there isn't a lot of public pushback. People go on with their lives, as they should. There is no major impetus to call for change. Leaders can sink back into their chairs quite comfortably. But when we're in decline with major controversy and no improvements, people start paying attention. And that's precisely the timing when we start choosing new people to take on these leadership roles. The opportunity for change with both mayor and council in October is very exciting. But ultimately, it comes down to whether or not voters can overcome a tendency towards the familiar. Are we willing to vote for an opportunity to give the entire community of the CBRM a much better deal? Will we give ourselves a much better chance at finding our way back to better times - or set ourselves up for further decline?
Frankie MacLean Follow Me
Would you mind canning the long blabbering lectures. Also you need to add that Darryl Wilson fellow to your list of candidates. And find out if he is allowed to use the CBRM fire logo on his signs.Someone should complain to election officials about this as well as the Director of CBRM Fire Operations
Joe Ward My Post Follow Me
You're "somebody" too, Frankie. Let them know about your concerns.
Michael MacNeil Follow Me
Frankie your a very rude individual on line and I ask go cape Breton to consider banning your comments for life. If behaviour like yours is allowed on this site, it will discourage anybody from posting or commenting. No body likes to be called stunned or an idiot or any of the other words I have seen you use on here, Have a wonderful day Frankie and once you figure out what district your in please don't vote for me
[comment deleted] Posted
Frankie MacLean Follow Me
Why ban me from helping you guys? If nobody tells you that you are being obnoxious to put in these long rambling lectures like you know it all, you have no chance of getting more than just your family to vote for you. I didn't call anybody an idiot. I merely made the point that you were stunned for not understanding the purpose of heritage laws. The fact that neither mayoral candidate responded to your stupid suggestion/ idea backs me up since they each likely have dozens of supporters trolling this site. If they could think of some way to respond to your dumb suggestion about heritage laws saving the railroad without offending you, they would have responded by now.
Frankie MacLean Follow Me
You are running for public office which means you are subject to criticism for you statements. That includes analysis of your intlect where you thoughtlessly promote a concept that is irrational or displays lack of basic understanding of law. The word idiot was used by yourself, not me but you are entitled to use that word on yourself. I note that neither of the two mayoralty candidates have been able to craft a reply to your poorly considered suggestion. I presume becasue they can't figure out how to reply without also potentially insulting your intelligence.

Frankie MacLean Follow Me
Sure and you can post the responses to you stupid idea that the mayoral candidates didn't send you because they don't know how to respond without pointing out what an idiot you are for suggesting something that stupid
Frankie MacLean Follow Me
Hey Michael MacNeil, seems the mayoral candidates STILL didn't respond to your stupid idea. I wonder why.
Wayne O'Toole Follow Me
Wow Frankie that is very rude. And yes if you would like somebody to bring something up, I am quite sure you are capable
Frankie MacLean Follow Me
Thanks Wayne but Wilson's opponents in District 4 should do that or one of you dead enders on here day and night with nothing else to do.
Wayne O'Toole Follow Me
Deadenders? Wow you are a piece of work aren't you. Attacking everyone and offering zero intelligence to the convo. You should consider a rant room, its more suited for you.
Frankie MacLean Follow Me
It is not me but Michael MacNeil who had to delete all his rude stupid comments before too many voters read them
Barry Smith Follow Me
Joe as you posted this item I feel you should be keeping it up to date, as a list of those running seems to be only available here. There are a number of people who through their hat in the ring, but are not listed. I know you are busy but I feel you should up dates the names or remove the post.
Frankie MacLean Follow Me
I agree with Barry Smith. If you are goig to put a list up like that, you become obliged to keep it updated. Otherwise you are irresponsibly posting FALSE and MISLEADING information
Bill Fiander Follow Me
HI Barry, Joe is doing his best to keep this list up to date, and I'm sure as candidates become known and throw their hat into the ring, the list will be updated. I also feel it is our responsibility to at least know who is running in our district. This is not Joe's responsibility. The CB Post usually announces everyone who is running. But there may be some who will not go the CB Post route, so it would be incumbent upon them to get their name out there. The fact that for the first time someone has taken it upon themselves to keep people informed about who is out there running should be commended.
Frankie MacLean Follow Me
Well he has more information now and he is not updating so SNAP TO IT JOE and get on that issue about buddy using the CBRM Fire Logo on his signs
Bill Fiander Follow Me
Hi Frankie, you seem to be an upstanding citizen who would like to make a change. Is it possible for you to contact someone about your concerns regarding the fire logo?
Barry Smith Follow Me
HI Bill First of all I appreciate the work that Joe has done.....but I mentioned one candidate 10 days ago..still not on list, also Fogarty is running in District 4 as I received his phamlet yesterday in my mail box. I usually check the "post" but sometime miss announcements because of size etc...maybe go cape Breton site could go updates as you are busy Joe with running your campaign...just a suggestion.
Joe Ward My Post Follow Me
Hi Barry, please provide me with a list of names that you see that are not included in the list. If you recall the source of where they announced, please indicate. I appreciate your help with crowdsourcing this info. I certainly would like to keep it as up to date as possible.
Frankie MacLean Follow Me
you can start by putting that Darryl fire logo guy on there
Mathew Georghiou Follow Me
It is not possible for Joe or anyone to compile an accurate list at this point because there is no way to reliably know who is running. It's up to each individual candidate to inform the public of their intention to run. Some do this by issuing a news release to local media, others do it with a Facebook post, while others do very little ...and most recently some are doing it here on goCapeBreton.com (which I think is their best option). And, even if the mainstream media runs the story, it is in print or on radio for only a single day and how many of us read the print newspaper cover to cover every day or listen to every radio news broadcast? The answer is no one. Expecting Joe to be 100% accurate is not reasonable. Not to mention, he has done this on a purely volunteer effort. Instead of putting heat on Joe, you should be putting heat on the candidates to motivate them to contact Joe and get their names on the list. Only AFTER the candidates submit their official nomination papers (happening right now) can there be a fully accurate list of candidates. And, I'm sure Joe was planning on trying to get this list when the government makes it available.
Barry Smith Follow Me
Thanks Mathew...maybe CBRM will find a better way of informing the voter public of who is and what district They are running in.
Joe Ward My Post Follow Me
That is an area of focus for me, if I'm elected for District 7. There are many changes to be made. Ease and efficiency of finding information is a part of transparency. Obviously, embracing local platforms including goCapeBreton is a part of making that information get to the people who need and want it.
Frankie MacLean Follow Me
Mathew once he poses as putting up a list, he has to follow through. Keep it up to date. How much are we paying him?
Mathew Georghiou Follow Me
We and you are paying him $0. No one has paid Joe for anything he has posted on goCapeBreton.com (and is one of the reasons I have commended him for his community service). Plus, as I have noted above, there is NO way to know for sure who is running. I could tell Joe that Puffin MacPuffinface is running because I saw some lawn sign somewhere, but knowing Joe he would want to research this to make sure it was true before he posted it here. That all takes time.
Frankie MacLean Follow Me
Don't get all self righteous on that point Mathew. If you have these people working without paying them, you have manipulated them into a situation worse than slavery. At least slaves get some care. This Joe slave seems to get nothing while others on this site (like you) get paid for their labour.
Frankie MacLean Follow Me
Actually, since you are getting paid, you should be adding and updating the content, not Joe slave
Mathew Georghiou Follow Me
You sure think you know a lot more than you do Frankie, particularly since everything I've seen you imply has been wrong. I think we are all done with your aggressive behaviour towards others. I hope you will someday find the wisdom to build up rather than tear down. For those reading this, Frankie has been warned several times about his comments on this post and on others on goCapeBreton.com, but it seems he is purposely trying to antagonize people, so his account is now suspended. Regrettably, it's the first time we have had to do so in over 1 year of operation, 2,600 members, and nearly 10,000 posts. But, the integrity of what we are trying to build here to help Cape Breton Island is important to us, as I know it is to those of you who are participating.
Harrington Potter Follow Me
This seems to be an overreaction. Frankie was making a comment about the nature of volunteerism being a mask for unpaid work especially when the "volunteer" otherwise has no source of employment or income
[comment deleted] Posted
Wayne O'Toole Follow Me
and Harrington, I believe it was not the "volunteer" comment that was the nail, it could be calling people idiots, moron, stupid and making up things. This board however is completely volunteer, nobody asked Joe to do this post, he chose to on his own to try and keep people up to date as best he can on the candidates. Matthew has not demanded he do it or asked him to volunteer. I am not getting paid to be here, I come here for good discussion, and dialect. Having someone intentionally sabotage everything you say, and name call is just not good for a group like this. Frankie was given ample warning, but chose his path and suffers te consequences so others feel they have a safe place to discuss and debate. There is no need to cut people down the way he has, even if you disagree
Mathew Georghiou Follow Me
Wayne, you are exactly right. Also, "Harrington Potter" has now been disabled too as we can tell that it was Frankie creating a new account so he can continue to cause trouble.
Wayne O'Toole Follow Me
Yes not the brightest name choice. And I like the Harry Potter series for my kids lol

UPDATE: Thank you to all those helping me to crowd-source this information. Two new candidates have been added to the list, challenging in District 4. That district is really getting active! New candidates added are Darrell Wilson and Richard Fogarty.

UPDATE: List now updated with the unofficial list provided by the CBRM as of today. Link to that list added at the top of this article. Several more challengers were added. Note: For "Joe's Tip" for challenger Dave Wilson in District 10 I've given a recommendation of: "Do Not Consider" This is due to Mr. Wilson having been convicted and serving time for defrauding taxpayers while a provincial MLA: http://www.capebretonpost.com/News/Local/2012-04-19/article-2959480/Former-MLA-sentenced-to-jail-for-expense-fraud/1

UPDATE: Nigel Kearns, candidate for District 5, has taken the pledge.
Joe Ward My Post Follow Me
UPDATE: 27 of 46 candidates I have listed above have given general acceptance of the pledge. Of course, responses varied in detail. An additional two are either pending or partial. 6 of 8 of the incumbent councillors reoffering have accepted or acknowledged. It is possible that several candidates may be yet unaware. I sent out an email; however, there were several bounces. If any of you would like to take the pledge, and have not yet done so, please message me here on goCapeBreton.com or send me an email to [email protected]. There are no gotchas here. The pledge is very straightforward, and all candidates are invited to clarify or disagree with any particular item.
