7 months ago, the goCapeBreton community was first introduced to Ayden Yhard. At only six years old, he became the youth record holder in Nova Scotia for rainbow trout catch and keep. You'll find him and his record trout on page 39 of this year's Nova Scotia Anglers' Handbook.
Ayden's still keeping at it. This weekend he was successfully angling for stripers.
Many Cape Breton anglers are now excited about striped bass - or stripers. They've been chasing them all over the island, and actively dropping into the Cape Breton Fishing Fanatics Facebook group to get tips on where and how to land them. Hint: Use mackerel as bait.
Our young fishermen like Ayden Yhard, and Tanner Basque - who pulled in that 49-lb striper in Cape Breton a week ago - are doing their part to keep the excitement high. Basque, 15, is wisely keeping the spot a fisherman's secret. Where he landed the trophy striper is yet-to-be-disclosed.
This weekend Ayden is enjoying the Cabot Trail with his little brother William and baby sister Olivia. As one of Cape Breton's most active anglers, his dad Mark would never think of going on any staycation without their rods in the car. That decision paid off for young Ayden last night. While fishing in Cheticamp, he landed his striper.
There's no doubt that Ayden is developing a true passion for Cape Breton angling with his dad's guidance. He's already breaking records with his rainbow trout catch and landing impressive stripers. He's certainly one of the island's best young fishermen in the making.
