| UPDATE NOV 29, 2018: Flooding hits again just 7 months after this article was written in April 2018 - Read more about the flooding today Nov 29, 2018 |
The Thanksgiving Day flood of 2016 was quite an event. One we were told was a rare 100-year occurrence. Drainage would be improved. No-build zones would be designated. Damages would be compensated.
But, it seems we have now had at least two near-repeats of the flood already, only 17 months since the big flood. This weekend of April 20 (2018) was the latest, with Sydney's Atlantic Street field completely flooded, and water inching closer to Brookland Elementary School and St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Parish. Both of which had to undergo extensive repairs from the 2016 flood. The land where homes were demolished is also completely flooded again.
If the rain continued for another day, we would likely have a repeat of the big flood. Again. Within months. Not 100 years.
Hopefully, this second or third near-miss will serve as a warning to our government leadership that further action needs to be taken to prevent a preventable disaster.
