GLOBAL WEEK OF CLIMATE ACTION INCLUDES “STRIKE FOR THE EARTH”
A Critical Mass of Concerned Capers at the CBRM Civic Centre
The Global Week of Climate Action (Sep 20-27) has already seen up to 4 million concerned citizens worldwide striking, marching, and mobilizing to demand government action on the climate crisis. Cape Breton Extinction Rebellion, a local branch of the international climate action group, is offering a range of events during the Week of Action, culminating with a “Strike for the Earth” this Friday.
“The climate crisis affects everyone, so all levels of government need to help,” Says Scott Sharplin, coordinator for Cape Breton Extinction Rebellion. “This island has a long, proud history of strike actions. It’s time to draw a line and demand action.”
The group staged a similar protest in May, after which CBRM Mayor and City Council voted to adopt their demands. However, according to Sharplin, no meaningful action has been taken since then. “City Council has acknowledged that the climate crisis is an emergency. Now they need to act like it.”
Members of the group have resolved to gather outside the Civic Centre and stay until Mayor Clarke agrees to speak with them. They emphasize that their protest methods are non-violent and non-destructive. “We just want to talk,” Says Sharplin, “But we can’t afford to take no for an answer.”
The protest in May involved over 150 citizens. This time, organizers expect an even bigger turnout because of the global student strikes, and because international climate icon Greta Thunberg has asked adults to strike in support of the youth. “This is not just for children or teenagers,” Says Thunberg, “This is for everyone. We are striking to disrupt the system.” Indeed, trade unions and academic institutions around the world are voicing their support for the movement.
“Join us for five minutes, or come for four hours,” Urges Sharplin, “Bring a sign, or just your voice. Stand up for the next generation of Capers. Stand up for the island you love. Stand up for our survival.”
