Centre 200 Is A Wonderful Facility For Our Community

Recently, I had the opportunity to take a behind the scenes tour of Centre 200 in Sydney. I've been to Centre 200 many times to watch sporting events in the arena, or to attend business events in the concourse area. Many years ago, I had fun playing on the basketball court in an opening game for the Globe Trotters.

I actually grew up on Douglas Street (which terminates at Centre 200) and spent a lot of time at the old Sydney Forum back in the day, and at the Police Boys and Girls Club that was in behind the rink (who loves bumper-pool?). I still remember the lucky day that I found a $20 bill in the dirt roads and hills between the buildings (or maybe it was just $5 and it grew in time like a fishing story :-)

Back to present day, I was touring the Centre 200 facility for the Cape Breton Highlanders professional basketball team that recently launched here. And, I was quite impressed ... and thankful ... that we have this facility in our community. Paul MacDonald, General Manager, was kind enough to lead the tour.

I wish I had taken some photos (if I do, I will add them here later), but here is what stood out to me:

  • The facility is large enough to host significant events, yet still seems intimate for a large arena.

  • Every seat is a good seat.

  • The facility is well kept and clean.

  • With the large concourse, the facility can also host smaller events that don't need access to the arena.

  • It is wired well for video.

  • Good ice surface and an authentic hardwood basketball court.

  • The building is increasingly energy efficient.

  • The facility is getting even better with new improvements coming.

Without a facility of this size and capability, Cape Breton would miss out on a lot of really interesting events.

I could also tell that Paul cared about the success of the facility and making sure his team continues to improve it for the good of our community. I'm looking forward to the 20 home games the Cape Breton Highlanders will be playing this season.

I agree fully Mathew! I have worked numerous of events of all types in C200 for countless years. I am confident in saying there is not a space in C200 that I have not been in and there is so much behind the scenes to make what the public see and enjoy. We are very fortunate to have such a facility. Without it, we would be excluded from the market for attracting many events, that directly benefit our economy. As well, the events that bring a multitude of entertainment to us all. I must also give a big tip of the hat to Paul and his staff who work so hard on every level of the operation. As an event guy, the staff there treats every event as their own and that makes my job much easier, for that, I thank them. The vision and future plans for C200 will only strengthen where we are today and enable us to accomplish greater things tomorrow. Thanks for posting this Mathew and prompting me to comment on this long overdue tip of the hat to C200 and its staff.

So what do you think of an extension out the back for a new library?

Serious Question, Mathew: Is this post an attempt to soften up the ground for Cecil Clarke's horrible suggestion to put the new library in Centre 200?
Mathew Georghiou My Post Follow Me
Hey Parker, the answer to your question is no. My post has nothing to do with the library. I'm not even sure I remember hearing about C200 being one of the options. I'm not informed enough about the library to share an opinion either way. If I have an informed opinion on something that impacts the community, I would state it clearly. I wouldn't try to covertly position it into some other messaging. I don't play that game. I follow the motto of, "do what you say, and say what you do." I wrote this story because I truly was impressed with C200 and what happens behind the scenes that I thought it was worth sharing.
